ENGINEERING CASE STUDIESThe companies we've delivered for
Siemens
Sale of Wind Turbines on a turbine only or full EPC basis. We have now worked with Siemens since March 2013 and still actively recruit for them. The vacancy was given to us via the PSL agreement. Siemens Wind power has seen an increased number of projects won in APAC and needed a Senior Project Manager to ensure all projects are completed to budget and in a timely manner.
If we didn’t fill this position the current Project Managers would be overworked or the projects would be unable to be serviced. If the position was not filled Siemens Wind may struggle to complete projects on time meaning they could miss out on future tenders. The position had been advertised on the Siemens web-site but no relevant candidates had applied.
The Vacancy
The advertised vacancy was for a Senior Project Manager. The core duties were to assist in the preparation of tenders, assist in the sales negotiation process; inspect potential turbine sites and access conditions; Responsible for starting up projects, follow up and monitor the projects and reporting to management of project status; managing and coaching employees assigned to the project.
The client wanted someone who had industry experience of over 5 years. Also they needed someone who had Project Managed, not just the installation of the turbines, but also the construction of the Wind farms infrastructure.
As a previous person had turned the offer of employment down the role was urgent. So we needed to work fast to make sure we could have someone on board by the deadline date.
Finding the right candidate
Due to the PSL to job requirement was emailed to me directly. I then contacted our contact in HR to find out how urgent the role was and discuss more qualifying information. As this was an urgent position we agreed that I would send any relevant profiles to HR and the hiring manager. I was also given direct access to the hiring manager to ensure we had a quick turnaround for feedback.
As people with this skill set are not widely on job boards. We took the Head Hunt approach. I actively contacted people from our internal database to ask for recommendations and targeted large Wind Turbine Manufacturers to head hunt from. Following numerous man hours I finally had a short list of 5 possible candidates.
After finding 5 relevant candidates I interviewed them. Discussing in depth about their experience and also asking numerous technical questions to ensure they could back up the information included in their CV. Following this I narrowed the 5 candidates to 3 and submitted them.
Deadlines and Challenges
I informed the Hiring Manager that I would have a short list of at least 2 candidates to her within 1 week. Before the end of this deadline we had sent 3 candidates. We had a long break in the process due to the hiring manager going on holiday but working in close cooperation with Siemens Wind HR we managed to ensure all the candidates were well informed of all time scales and set their expectations clearly. From taking the job to filling the position it took 6 weeks.
Recommendation
I worked with Genesis Associates on several positions for Wind Power APAC. They took time to understand the requirements of the positon and as a results presented us with an excellent shortlist of candidates for interviews. It is clear that Genesis thoroughly interview any potential candidates, evidence by their details and professional cover sheet provided with each CV. This makes the decision making process on which candidates to progress to interview very straightforward. Throughout the process they were quick to response and had all required information about the candidate to hand for a smooth process.
Their candidate control is outstanding. Not only did Tom manage the candidate throughout the entire process ensuring maximum efficiency but I was also impressed that he kept in touch with the candidates once they had started with Siemens to guarantee they had bedded in well and help us identify any early concerns. I would have no hestiations in recommending Tom Gratton and Genesis Associates' as our recruitment partner of choice.
