The client
The client is a large packaging agency called VCG Kestrel and part of the VCG group of companies. The core business is to provide a complete range of services from design to print quality management primarily to retail and FMCG sectors. VCG Kestrel has worked with the Genesis Creative team for 3 years and they actively approach us to work on live and pending roles and view us as a preferred recruiter. We work with all of Kestrel’s onsite teams around the South Eastand are the preferred recruiter for the teambased with M&S in Paddington. 

The requirements

These particular vacancies came from VCG Kestrel winning sole supplier status with M&S. At the time they were looking for multiple Account Managers and then also four urgent Project Managersto create a new layer of team members to support the Account Managers. The core of these role involvedvarying degrees of cradle to grave project management, managing the day to day running of the account andchecking off artwork. They were all to be client facing. The Account Managers needed to be more confident and experienced in general with the Project Managers being more admin based and less experienced.

One of the challenges with this project was to find someone who has experience of working in a corporate environment and to put forward candidates who understand the importance of working within the culture of another business.

It was essential to find people who would respond well to and have a preference for a more formal and smart environment, both in terms of personality and appearance.We also knew it was unlikely we would find all of the people we needed in the Packaging industry with direct industry experience so we advised the hiring managers that from experience we have found some great people from other ‘design to print’ based industries and Kestrel agreed that this would be a good avenue. The key was strong project management skills, some relevant industry experience and the right attitude. The other obvious challenge in the industry as a whole that applied to this team was to find good project managers who were happy with the packaging artwork market and not hankering after involvement in the designand creative side of the industry. We know full well there is such a risk bearing in mind these people often miss the creative involvement and have a tendency to leave early on in the role. We needed to minimise the risk with all placements. 

The solution

Bearing in mind the number of positions we were recruiting for we decided to get a Consultant and Resourcer team working on the roles as opposed to one person. We employed all resources available including; referrals, database searching, head hunting, advertising and social media and prioritised the recruitment over some other some assignments due to the client commitment.

Urgency was important and this is something we are particularly experienced at creating, we like making things happen. This means qualifying and gaining absolute commitment from our candidates so that we are happy to recommend candidates for interview and to know that we are absolutely not wasting any time. We carried out all first stage screening and challenged and qualified the candidates before sending over CVs. When CVs were sent they were fully profiled with a balanced overview of suitability for the roles including any areas of concern or aspects to push on at interview. We also make a point of keeping the client updated with any progress, obstacles we may find on the way and setbacks. 

On this occasion advertising and referrals played a key part in our search with the Project Managers because of the level of role. We then found the more proactive methods of networking and head hunting were more suited to finding the experienced Account Managers. It was great for us that the brief was quite open to other industries as it allowed us to use our experience to find the right people rather than just looking for obvious industry experience from a competitor. We also appreciated the trust from Kestrel.

From the first 6 interviews we were really pleased that all 6 candidates were offered with 4 accepting and joining the team. Our success in presenting well selected suitable people and offers being made continued with a 90% acceptance rate. On one occasion Kestrel decided to create a new position on the team to offer one of our candidates who they were particularly impressed with. In total within the last 3 months we have placed 7 people with Kestrel at M&S.
